Sony established the ultraportable B5-sized notebook genre years ago with their 505. The X505 Carbon Fiber ultralight ignited the marketplace. Now with the G2, Sony's innovation is again on display.

At its lightest (1.89 pounds [859g]), the Sony Vaio G2 is one of the lightest "fully-usable" notebooks ever produced. Breaking the two-pound barrier--with a full a 12.1" XGA TFT (hard coating) and 17mm keypitch keyboard--seemed improbable simply because these are not shrinkable features.

Sony did it by utilizing one of the most advanced materials available: carbon fiber. And, they did it by taking advantage of their past experiences with carbon fiber notebooks. For its many advantages, Carbon fiber is a complex material to work with, and Sony has built expertise. Carbon fiber is lighter, stronger, better at heat dissipation, and more rigid than the next best choice (aluminum or magnesium alloy). The Vaio G2's top and bottom external casing is multi-layer carbon fiber and the palm rest is carbon mold. The G2's carbon construction is more thorough than its carbon forebears, the X505 and the SZ/carbon.

This casing, along with a shock-mounted HDD, make the Vaio G2 very durable. It is tested to survive a drop (although not guaranteed to do so), and should be able to withstand 120kg of weight (although not guaranteed to do so).

The version with installed DVD-RW weighs only 2.17 pounds. With the DVD-RW and the double-capacity 12-hour (ideal list time) battery, total weight is 2.46 pounds! We think that stat is actually more impressive than the 1.89-pound base weight. (Note that DVD-drive and no-drive models of the G2 are different. You cannot add an internal drive to a no-drive model, but you can use an external DVD-RW drive such as Sony's DDRW firewire.) Sony thoughtfully made the AC adapter small and light, as well.

Thoughtful extras include a quiet fan and keyboard, and dual-internal wifi antennas to improve reception. The Intel Core 2 Duo U7600 (1.20 GHz), 2.0gb max RAM, 100gb HDD provide plenty of power (or optional 64GB solid state HDD). And, integrated Bluetooth, wifi, Firewire, 2 x USB 2.0, and VGA provide plenty of convenience.

The Sony Vaio G2 is a dream machine for the frequent traveler. As with all our notebooks, the Vaio G2 includes unlimited toll-free tech phone and email support, one year Fedex rescue service warranty.

Dynamism also offers the G2 with the longer-life standard battery in place of the default light-weight battery. Please contact us for details.
