    Office-friendly metal printing

    Expert​ ​metallurgy​ ​built-in

    The Desktop Metal Studio System uses industry standard MIM (Metal Injection Molding) materials. This opens up an ecosystem of high-quality alloys with a mature supply chain and well-studied process controls. Resulting parts can be sintered to 96-99% density, with better than 99% dimensional accuracy with the system’s adaptive furnace profiles.

    End-to-end solution
    Cloud Connected system automatically determines the ideal thermal profile and part placement, as well as accounting for shrinkage. No dedicated metallurgist is required for furnace operation.
    Office-safe
    Designed for use in an office environment without PPE or expensive facility installation requirements. All materials and waste materials are compliant with CA Prop. 65.
    Cost-effective
    Initial purchase and facility setup costs up to 10x less than comparable laser-based systems, and cloud-based integrated metallurgy significantly lowers operating costs.
    Printer
    Unlike laser-based systems that selectively melt metal powder, the printer extrudes bound metal rods—similar to how an FDM printer works. This eliminates the safety requirements often associated with metal 3D printing while enabling new features like the use of closed-cell infill for lightweight strength.

    Debinder
    The debinder prepares green parts for sintering by dissolving primary binder. With a low-emission design, it requires no external ventilation and is safe for an office environment. Automatic fluid distillation and recycling means there is no need to refill between each cycle.

    Furnace
    Fully-automated with closed-loop thermal control, the furnace is the first to deliver industrial-strength sintering in an office-friendly package. Built-in profiles are tuned to every build and material to ensure uniform heating and cooling without the residual stresses introduced in laser-based systems.

    How it works

    1. Prep / Digital model
    Proprietary embedded software accepts a variety of formats including but not limited to STL. All equipment can be monitored live via the web-based, remote server that provides total process quality control.
    2. Print / Green part
    Similar to FDM, the Studio printer shapes a “green” part layer-by-layer by heating and extruding specially formulated bound metal rods. The green part can be sanded by hand easily for light finishing.
    3. Debind / Brown part
    A portion of the binder is first removed in the included debinding station. The debinding solvent is distilled in a closed loop system and only needs to be supplemented occasionally with a “topping off” quantity.
    4. Sinter/ Sintered part
    The furnace then heats the part to temperatures near melting, densifying metal powder to 96-99.8%.

    Supports can be removed by hand. The resulting near net shape parts can be welded, bead blasted, or machined for final form, fit, and function.

    Separable Supports™

    Laser-based systems weld parts to supports, requiring machining or wire EDM to remove the part. The Desktop Metal Studio System has easily hand-separable supports due to the use of a ceramic interface material.
