| The
Panasonic T5 is an all-day ultralight. The 2.77 pound notebook
has a 14-hour standard battery life (real world estimate of
7-10 hours) when used with its standard battery. The lightweight
battery reduces the weight to 2.26 pounds but still provides 6.5 hours of use (3-4 real life).
It is built to withstand 50kg (110 pounds) of
weight, as well as a 30cm (11.8 inch) drop. (Although it reaches
this threshold in the lab, it is not guaranteed. And, the HDD is shock-mounted,
to reduce the risk of physical data loss.
The
chassis measures 10.55 x 8.27 x 1.03-1.53 inches, just enough
for the keyboard to reach its outstanding 19mm keypitch. The
Intel Centrino Core 2 Duo U7500 1.06GHz processor (with 2mb of on-chip
cache) is complemented by 2.0gb RAM (max).
The T5's closest competition comes from other Panasonic models
(the R6/W5/Y5), but there is no ultralight on the market that
offers its battery life and wealth of integrated features in
such a small package. Multiple color choices are also available
by special order. (Black, gunmetal, blue, red, ice white,
purple haze, golden, orange, pink diamond, chocolate.)

Dynamism Compares
We don't know if Panasonic invented cold fusion to get a 2.77-pound notebook running for 15 hours, but we're impressed. Still, unless you really need extreme battery life, we prefer the Panasonic W5. The W5 still has a stellar 12-hour
(official) battery, it has a DVD-RW, it weighs a bit less, and cost is in the same range.
