The
Panasonic W-series is the high-flying CEO's dream machine. The newly released W7--the lightest notebook
on the market with a 12.1" screen and integrated optical
(DVD-RW) drive--features Intel's ultra-low voltage mobile processor, the Core 2 Duo U7700 1.33GHz.
These new processors boost the standard battery official runtime to a surreal (for a 2.7 pound machine) 10.5-hours. Even given that manufacturer list times can be optimistic, it is an extraordinary achievement to get 6 hours of real-world use from a 2.7 pound, no-compromise ultralight!
One of the methods used to achieve the W7's incredible lightness of being is its novel DVD-RW design (the surface
of the chassis opens for a disc). The Panasonic W7 measures 10.6 x 8.2 x 0.9 ~ 1.7 inches.
Similarly, the W7's
12.1" XGA TFT is larger than any similarly equipped rival.
And, the 19mm keypitch keyboard (same as the Panasonic
T7) gives these two computers the largest keyboard in the
sub-3 pound space. The W7 even has a fanless design for serene
computing.
Unfortunately,
life is not always serene, so the Panasonic W7 is durable as well. It
withstood 100kg (220 pounds) of weight, as well as a 30cm
(11.8 inch) drop, in Panasonic's lab tests. While this is
by no means a guarantee that it will always do so, strength is a
good trait in an ultraportable notebook. The 320gb (max) hard
drive is also shock-insulated.
The
Panasonic W7 is everything most business travelers crave--in
an extraordinarily well-engineered, ultralight package. And since leaders sometimes like to express themselves,
it's available in multiple
color choices (silver, orange, brown, pink, green, platinum, black, blue apple, blueberry, white and red).
